Lugar Theatre: The Only Place for Movies in Thimphu City

Well, I can still remember the last time i saw a Bhutan movie in the only picture hall or Movie Theater in the Thimphu. The Lugar Theatre which lies in the heart of the Thimphu Town put up the latest Bhutanese Movies and Hindi Movies but with the release of 22 Bhutanese movies last year, the highest since 2000, the 890-seater Lugar theatre in Thimphu is booked for local screenings upto January 2008.

And till date only 10 movies had been screened. The movies had to be screened accordingly, serially, after the national film and TV review board issued certificates for screening of the movies. The duration of screening depended upon how hit the movie was, according to the vice president of motion picture association of Bhutan (MPAB), Mila Tobgyel."

Lugar Theatre provides the hub for the people to meet and have a good time. The Taste of Bhutanese Movies has changed a lot compared to two three years before, with romantic, social awareness and good theme movies caching the eyes of the few young bhutanese with elder always having a go for the new released movies. The Tickets are available from the counter and usually there is minimal chance of not getting unless when there is rush during few days of the movie arrival in the hall.

The Cost of Bhutanese Movies Tickets is much higher than the Hinid movies with a tickets cost ranging from Nu 50 which is around $ 1.1 to Nu 150 respectively depending on the seating in the theatre. Few Bhutanese movies have caught the attention in the international Scene, the likes of "Travelers and Magicians", Phorpa or the "cup" which was released in 1999.

i remember this theater but didn't know this is the only movie place in thimpu. also heard that this is a favorite meet-up and pick-up place.

there was a movie showing when i was in thimpu sometime in the end of may but didn't have the luxury of time to watch. hopefully when i come back, probably in november, i can get a glimpse of what this theater looks like the inside.

the bhutan movies they show here, are they in the local language with subtitles?

thanks. interesting blog you have.
