Taktsang Monastery AKA The Tiger's Nest of Bhutan

The Famous and sacred Taktsang Monastery located about 20 minutes drive north of Paro, It hangs on a cliff at 3,120 meters (10,200 feet), some 700 meters (2,300 feet) above the bottom of Paro valley. Taktsang Monastery is rated as one of most Amazing Monastery in the World by many people. The place where the Guru Rimpoche flew over the Himalayan from Tibet in the 7th century on the back of a flying Tigress is said to be the origin of Buddhism in Bhutan.

The Famous Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest)

There is no road to the Monastery except to hike from the parking lot at the base of the hill and it is about a 2 hour hike to the best view point. It will take about 2-3 hours walk depending on the how fast you walk uphill. The trail leads continuous uphill and there are certain viewpoint of the Monastery from down. For Bhutanese people who are used to walking takes about 1 and half hour climbing up and for tourist, it might take about 2-3 hours. The Monastery sometime remain closed to the public but due to it's high religious status, just seeing it from the outside is well worth the effort.

It is also known as “Tiger’s nest” and that the legend is that Guru Rinpoche flew over the Himalaya from Tibet in the 7th century on the back of a flying tigress. And it is said to be the origin of Buddhism in Bhutan, He then mediated in a cave there for three months where the monastery was later built.

In 1998,Taktsang Monastery was severely damaged by fire and now has been fully restored.
